Waxing is not generally considered a pleasant tip-toe through the tulips, and there is no such thing as totally painless body hair removal. However, waxing pain can vary from client to client. The potential pain from waxing hair removal can be determined by a client’s tolerance, where hair removal is performed, the skin structure, and the client’s skin type.

Though pain can be subjective, certain body areas or clients can experience more pain than others. Areas like the face, pubic mound, and underarms can be sensitive for a woman or man, but chest hair waxing on a man can be quite intense. Some people compare the pain of waxing to ripping off a band-aid. Rest assured most clients make it through their entire appointment while only experiencing mild discomfort. Waxing is NOT painful like you see in the movies, we promise!

Waxing can be more painful for first-time waxers, and those with strong, course hair. Clients with uneven hair growth cycles or those who shave in-between waxing can experience more pain because of the different hair lengths/cycles. The subtle nuances of the shorter and longer hairs can make the pain more noticeable. Clients who adopt a regular skin care/post-wax care routine may find waxing less painful over time. With all of these factors in mind, yes, waxing can get less painful with time!

Now what can you do to help ease the discomfort of waxing you ask? You want to make sure the hair being waxed is at least a 1/4″ to be able for the wax to adhere to the hair. As well as post-wax appointment you should exfoliate the area two to three times a week followed by moisturizing to keep the skin nice and smooth, preventing any dead skin buildup on the surface.

Being nervous for your appointment is completely understandable and you may want to have something to ease your nerves. On the day of your appointment, skip the caffeine and alcohol. Caffeine and alcohol are stimulants which can actually make you feel more pain as well as alcohol being a blood thinner. We recommend taking an over-the-counter anti-inflammatory or pain reliever about an hour prior to your appointment. Just be sure to avoid ones that act as blood thinners, such as Aspirin. You will also want to avoid tight clothing, choose something loose fitting and breathable to wear after your wax.

At Sphynx Skin Studio, clients must be 18 years of age. Minors receiving waxing services must be accompanied by a parent/legal guardian with a signed consent form on file.

The skin may be tender in the waxed area for the first couple of days. To help speed up the healing process, say no to the hot showers and engaging in any activities that cause excess friction or sweating. Also avoid exposing the freshly waxed areas to sun, tanning beds, hot tubs, saunas, pools, lakes/oceans, or any extreme heat for 24 to 48 hours. This is to ensure that bacteria does not get into the open hair follicles.

Keep in mind that the hairs grow in different cycles, and sometimes after the first wax you may still see some hairs or in the days following. The recently removed hair is not growing again, it is the other cycles of growth still in the skin. If waxing for a special event or vacation we recommend at least two waxes before the event to get smoother results. You will also want to follow your estheticians suggestion on when to book your next waxing appointment. Keeping up with waxing every 4-6 weeks will keep all the hair on the same cycle and thin out the follicles, which helps with sensitivity as the hairs grow back finer and sparser.

Yes you can! As a courtesy we do ask that you wear a tampon or menstrual cup during your service. Keep in mind that you may be prone to extra sensitivity while waxing on your cycle. If necessary, we can get you rescheduled for another time in the near future!

In most cases it is completely safe to get a wax while being pregnant, but we always advise to check with your doctor beforehand.

During pregnancy a woman’s body goes through some pretty big changes. A rise in pregnancy hormones can cause the female body to experience more hair growth than usual, and possibly even thicker hair. Thats where we come in. We can help ensure that you stay comfortable down there during your pregnancy, wether we remove everything or just get those areas you may not be able to see or reach anymore. We do ask that if you are in your 2nd trimester or further, let us know when booking your appointment so we can schedule more time to ensure your comfort.
